SP- Indonesia, Indonesia– Controversy erupted on Press Freedom Day! A peaceful protest by journalists in front of the Batam Mayor’s Office turned heated after allegations surfaced of obstruction and restrictions on journalistic work by authorities.
The most inflammatory moment occurred when an officer was heard loudly prohibiting coverage
“Don’t take photos!”
This statement immediately shook the atmosphere of the protest, which had initially been peaceful, into a tense one.
Peaceful Protest ‘Dragged’ into Conflict
The protest, organized by the Alliance of Independent Journalists of Batam City in conjunction with other press organizations, initially proceeded orderly.
However, the situation changed drastically when officers asked the protesters to move location. The protesters’ refusal, citing rain and time constraints, allegedly sparked open tension.
The officers then allegedly began restricting their movement, even targeting journalists who were covering the event.
Cameras ‘Muted,’ Emotions Explode
The ban on filming became the most heated point. Journalists’ core activity of documenting events was allegedly halted in the field.
Arguments erupted. The atmosphere heated up. The public spotlight focused sharply.
Called Intimidation: “This Isn’t Just an Incident!”
A wave of condemnation immediately erupted. Several parties considered this incident a form of intimidation against press freedom.
The Coordinator of the Riau Islands Journalist Safety Committee (KKJ), Muhamad Ishlahuddin, called it a serious signal.
“If coverage is obstructed, this touches the heart of democracy,” he stressed.
Sharp Irony, Press Freedom Day Is ‘Locked Down’
This incident was considered highly ironic. At a time when the world was celebrating press freedom, allegations of restrictions against journalists arose in Batam.
If practices like this are allowed to continue, the effects could be widespread: fear, pressure, and even the silencing of the public space.
Police Have Yet to Provide an Explanation
As of the publication of this article, there has been no official statement from the police regarding the alleged obstruction.
