SP-Indonesia.com, Indonesia – For adventurous souls and vacation lovers seeking the joys of the outdoors, there’s no need to travel abroad. Indonesia boasts one of the world’s best hiking destinations: Mount Rinjani, towering 3,726 meters above sea level on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Mount Rinjani is known as the second-highest volcano in Indonesia after Mount Kerinci. It is located on Lombok Island, just east of Bali, separated by the Lombok Strait. The mountain stands firmly within the Mount Rinjani National Park and is one of the region’s most prominent landscapes.

Rinjani’s beauty can be seen from various coastal areas of Lombok, and even from parts of Bali on clear days. Located in North Lombok Regency, the mountain boasts a stunning landscape of traditional villages, verdant rice paddies, dense tropical forests, and exotic mountain valleys.
Two main villages serve as popular gateways to Rinjani: Senaru Village on the north side and Sembalun Village on the east side. These two villages serve as official climbing registration points and the starting point for most trails leading to the mountain.
Rinjani is an active stratovolcano with a large caldera containing a spectacular crater lake called Lake Segara Anak. In the center of the caldera also stands Mount Barujari, which occasionally emits active volcanic steam.
The combination of the crater lake, mountain forests, verdant valleys, and extreme hiking trails make Rinjani one of the most dramatic trekking destinations in the Indonesian archipelago.
Six Official Trails for Climbing Rinjani
The Mount Rinjani National Park Office manages six official hiking trails spread across the north and south sides of the mountain.
North Side
1. Sembalun Trail (East Lombok)
The most popular route offers sweeping savannah panoramas and the fastest access to the summit.
2. Senaru Trail (North Lombok)
Dominated by dense tropical forest and renowned for its stunning crater rim views.
3. Torean Trail (North Lombok)
Known as the most beautiful trail, it passes through steep cliffs, rivers, and natural waterfalls.
South Side
4. Timbanuh Trail (East Lombok)
Presents the challenges of tropical forests and is suitable for special interest tourism.
5. Aik Berik Trail (Central Lombok)
Features lush green forests with numerous natural waterfalls.
6. Tetebatu Trail (East Lombok)
Presents a rural atmosphere, natural forests, and captivating mountain panoramas.
The Sembalun and Senaru trails are the two main access routes most often chosen by climbers. The Sembalun trail is known as the fastest route to the 3,726-meter-above-sea-level summit, characterized by open savanna and steep climbs leading up to the summit.
The Senaru trail, meanwhile, offers a different experience through shady and cool tropical forests. This trail is more popular with climbers who want to enjoy panoramic views of the crater rim and the beauty of Lake Segara Anak.
Many climbers choose the best combination: ascending via Sembalun to reach the summit and descending via Senaru to enjoy the beauty of Rinjani’s tropical forests.
